“Design and Discuss : An Artistic Language Experience”

『デザインして論じ合う：アートを通じた言語体験』

One way to experience other cultures is through art. In the English major course of senior high second grade, in this activity, students learn about folk art from other countries, in particular, hex signs from the Pennsylvania Dutch community, from the teacher’s hometown. Students can discover the rich symbolism, meaning, and history behind these signs. After that, students are challenged to create symbols and design hex signs of their own. Students must use creativity and reasoning as well as be able to explain their symbols and decision making in group discussion. The hex signs are turned into magnets, so the students are able to take them home and keep them as a fun memory of the class. So much can be learned from the art of other cultures!

異文化を体験する方法の一つに、アート(芸術)があります。高Ⅱ英語選択クラスの授業の一部となるこの活動で、生徒たちは他国の民芸品、中でも授業担当者Ｋ先生の出身地である米国ペンシルバニア州のオランダ系コミュニティに伝えられる『ヘックス・サインズ “hex signs”』について学び、これら伝統的デザインの背後にある豊かな象徴、意味、歴史を発見することができます。さらに生徒たちは自分オリジナルのデザインを作ることにも挑戦します。生徒たちは創造性を発揮し、グループディスカッションで自分の作品についてどうしてそのようなデザインができたのか、説明できなくてはいけません。こうしてできたヘックス・サインズのデザイン作品はマグネットになりますので、生徒は持ち帰って思い出の一品にすることもできます。異文化のアートから、私たちは本当にたくさんのことを学ぶことができます！
